UCL IOE Confucius Institute established the Excellence Awards scheme in 2010 as a professional recognition to the Mandarin teachers who work in Secondary and Primary English schools. Ms Tang was chosen to receive the award for her continuous contributions to Chinese language teaching across the curriculum.

Mandarin was first introduced into Homewood School in 2013. In the past eight years, Mandarin has been developed into a strong subject and has deeply embedded into the school’s curriculum. Students numbers have risen from 10 in 2013 to 140 in 2021. In 2014, Homewood was awarded as a UCL IOE Confucius Classroom. In 2016, Homewood became one of the first schools who joined the Mandarin Excellence Programme (MEP) which is a government funded language programme. Every year, our students have the opportunity to attend a two-week visit to China to experience Chinese culture and learn Chinese language. So far, we have organised six trips to China and our students have learned a great deal from this once-in-a-life-time experience.

Mandarin is also one of the subjects that achieve excellent GCSE results at Homewood. In the past consecutive four years, 100% of the Mandarin students have achieved C or above in their GCSE exams. In this coming September, Mandarin will be run in our Sixth Form and our students will have the opportunity to take Mandarin to A-level and further.
