ANIMAL MANAGEMENT

Level 3

The BTEC qualification is designed for students who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress either into higher education or into jobs in the animal sector.

5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language


Course Content

This BTEC covers a wide range of topics about animal management in depth.

The BTEC qualification is designed for students who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress either into higher education or into jobs in the animal sector.

All five units in this course are mandatory, and they cover Animal Welfare and Ethics, Practical Animal Husbandry, Animal Behaviour, Animal Health and Diseases and Work Experience in the Animal Sector (including 75 hours external work experience in an appropriate environment and employment settings).

There will be a large amount of practical work using the animals on the farm, and the farm staff will be involved with delivering parts of the course. Other animal specialists from the work sector will also be involved in the delivery of specific parts of the course. 67% of the course is assessed by internal coursework assessments, and the other 33% is assessed by an external examination.

Further Opportunities

You could take this qualification further by completing further units as an extended diploma or higher qualification at an agricultural college. You could also use the qualification to gain UCAS points (equivalent to one A Level) to go on to a degree in a biology or animal related subject at university.

The BTEC qualification also supports learners who want to go straight on to pursue a career in an animal-related industry. You could also go on to an apprenticeship in the animal sector, for example at a farm or a zoo.

APPLIED SCIENCE

Level 3

Duration: 2 Years

This BTEC covers a selected range of science topics from physics, chemistry and biology. The BTEC qualification is designed for students who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education or to employment, possibly in the applied science sector.


Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grade 4 and above including at least a 4-4 in Combined Science or at least a grade 4 in the separate sciences


Course Content

The Extended Certificate course has four units over two years, these are:
Unit 1  - Principles and Applications of Science (external exam in year 12)
Unit 2  - Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (coursework)
Unit 3 - Science Investigation Skills (external exam in Year 13)
Unit 8 - Human Physiology (coursework)

This is a vocational course, and the focus is split equally between learning content and carrying out practical tasks. There  are opportunities for students to develop their reflective skills, teamwork, time management and scientific techniques.

You could take this course to complement other Advanced Level courses that may overlap with Biology such as Sports Science or Child Development. This course supports progression onto some Higher Education courses in science related subjects or more general Higher Education courses.

Many students who study through the BTEC route consider a career in research science, or as technicians in industry. However, with the relevant work experience candidates could progress on to careers in management, teaching or higher level research.

BEAUTY VTCT DIPLOMA IN MASSAGE THERAPY

Level 3

Duration: 2 Years

The qualification can lead to employment within a beauty salon, spa or leisure centre.

Course Content

This is an exciting holistic course running over two years in which you will be studying the following units:

  • Health and Safety – Understanding the importance of this within the industry
  • Personal Health and Wellbeing – Including nutrition and fitness
  • Anatomy and Physiology – The understanding of all the systems of the body and how they work
  • Body Massage – Practical and theory
  • Exploring Alternative and Complementary Therapies – Independent research and project work
  • Aromatherapy – Practical and theory
  • Indian Head massage – Practical and theory
  • Hot Stone Massage – Practical and theory

The course programme includes theory lessons, practical workshops and project work. All students need to complete practical assessments as well as multiple choice written papers to gain the full certificate. All equipment and consumables are provided during the course. Students are expected to buy a Beauty Tunic which must be worn with black trousers and black closed in shoes for every practical lesson.

BTEC DOUBLE BUSINESS

Level 3

Duration: 2 Years

This option is for anyone with a passion and drive for Business. If you enjoy finding out how the Business world works and want a qualification that will give you skills for your working life then this could be a good option for you.


Entry Requirements

5 GCSE grades at 9 to 4 including English and Maths. Successful completion of a Level 2 Business course would be beneficial but not essential. If Business has been studied before then a 4 is desired.

Course Content

As well as studying units 1, 2, 3 and 8 over the two years, you will also study the following:
As a double option in year 1 you will complete:

  •   Unit 4 - Managing an Event (Assessed via coursework)
  •   Unit 6 - Principles of Management (Assessed via exam)

As a double option in year 2 you will complete:

  •   Unit 5 - International Business (Assessed via coursework)
  •   Unit 19: Pitching a business idea (Assessed via coursework)

If you choose to study Business as a double option you will have lessons across two option blocks and over the two years gain the equivalent of two Level 3 qualifications. As part of the qualification you will have to complete at least 40 hours of work placement, which can be done across your course or in one block. The school and department will support you with this to ensure that you can gain enough evidence to complete your coursework.

BUSINESS

Level 3

Duration: 2 Year

The course covers all aspects of business and with further training you may wish to specialise and study a professional qualification in your chosen area such as Marketing, Retail or Customer Service.

5 GCSE grades at 9 to 4 including English and Maths. Successful completion of a Level 2 Business course would be beneficial but not essential. If Business has been studied before then a 4 is desired.


Course Content

The BTEC extended certificate is structured in 4 units.


As a single option in Year one, you will complete two units:

  •  Unit 1 – Exploring Business (Assessed via coursework) 90 guided learning hours
  •  Unit 2 – Developing a Marketing Campaign (Assessed via controlled conditions) 90 guided learning hours.

As a single option in Year 2, you will complete 2 FURTHER UNITS:

  • Unit 3 – Personal and Business Finance (Assessed via exam) 120 guided learning hours
  • Unit 8 – Recruitment and selection (Assessed via coursework) 60 guided learning hours

The course is taught and assessed using a variety of methods, from written reports, to case studies, research projects and presentations, as well as the external exams.

CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

Level 3:

Learning about child development is vital for working with children in an early year’s setting. It gives you a background of the key theories that will govern all aspects of your working practice and everything you do as an early year’s educator. The knowledge you will gain from this course will prepare you for a variety of careers as a childminder, family support worker or early years educator in the private, voluntary or state sector and/or allow progression to higher education studies in early years education or management.

Students applying for this course must have a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and Maths.

CRIMINOLOGY

Level 3

Duration: 2 years

Criminology is the study of crime and punishment, the theories behind what makes somebody a criminal and the punishments that work alongside it. Not all crimes are the same and we look at what kind of crimes take place within our society and crimes we know little about. We also look at the criminal justice system and how effective it is at controlling and preventing crime. 


Entry Requirements

GCSEs at a grade 5 or above#, including English Language, Mathematics and Science. 


Course Content

The topics we look at are Changing Awareness of Crime, Criminological Theories, Crime Scene to Courtroom and Crime and Punishment. 

The course comprises of 4 units: 

• Unit 1: Changing awareness of crime 

• Unit 2: Criminological theories 

• Unit 3: Crime scene to courtroom 

• Unit 4: Crime and punishment 

Assessment:

Criminology is a Level 3 Diploma, students have four main areas of study: 50% is examined with 2 examinations of Criminological Theories and Crime and Punishment. The remaining 50% is controlled assessment on Changing Awareness of Crime and Crime Scene to Courtroom. 

  • Unit 1 - Internal (Controlled assessment – Scenario based) 25% 
  • Unit 2 - External examination – 1hr 30mins 25% 
  • Unit 3 - Internal (Controlled assessment – Scenario based) 25% 
  • Unit 4 - External synoptic examination – 1hr 30mins 25%

Both parts are spread over the two year course.

Recognised and well respected by universities and employers, Criminology can offer students a number of skills in critical thinking and judgement as well as research skills and understanding how to form an argument effectively. 

Criminology can lead to a diverse range of jobs, this can include Policing, Social Work, CSI Units, Forensics and the Legal Profession.

 

EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION

Level 3

Duration: 1 year (can be studied in Year 12 or Year 13)

The Extended Project is suitable for students who are independent and self-motivated learners as this course requires them to direct and manage their own project and deadlines. It is essential that the students have a passion for the topic that they decide to base their project around and can be in the form of a dissertation or a piece of creative writing.


Entry Requirements

Level 4 or above at GCSE English Language and a minimum of 3 other Level 3 qualifications being taken alongside the Extended Project. This course is ideal for students in Year 13 or 14 who require an additional one year academic course to complete their programme.


Course Content

The EPQ gives you a unique opportunity to explore a topic of your own choosing or to become more deeply involved with your own creativity if that is an interest.

Students can choose from one of the following units: 

301: Dissertation - a theoretical written project (5000 words minimum) on any topic presenting an argument.

302: Investigation/Field Study - a practical investigatory project involving the collection of data. 

303: Performance - development of practical skills resulting in a performance of music, drama or sport.

304:  An Artefact - Making or designing something creative or to a design brief or to solve a problem.

This qualification is a 100% coursework course, which is studied over one year and will be entered for assessment in May of the examination year.

The EPQ aids the development of many key skills such as independent learning, research, academic writing, creativity, communication to an audience and critical thinking, all of  which are valued by both employers and universities. 

Many universities view the EPQ as an excellent way for students to get ready for university as many of the skills that are needed when completing the project are the same skills that are needed for university study. For some courses the university will make an alternative offer to an applicant based on their EPQ grade.

An EPQ is worth between 8 and 28 UCAS points making it roughly equivalent to half an A level or a Pass Grade at BTEC.

FOOD SCIENCE & NUTRITION

Level 3

Duration: 2 Years

Students will study the WJEC Level 3 Diploma in Food Science and Nutrition. Students studying this qualification develop an understanding of how science and nutrition is relevant to many industries and job roles. Care providers and nutritionists in hospitals use this knowledge, as do sports coaches and fitness instructors. Hotels and restaurants, food manufacturers and government agencies also use this understanding to develop menus, food products and policies that support healthy eating initiatives.

5 GCSEs at grade 4 and above including grade 4 in English and 4-4 in Science or grade 5 in Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE.


Course Content

This qualification is assessed using a combination of internal and external assessment. You will complete three units over the two years.

Unit 1: Meeting Nutritional Needs of Specific Groups. This unit will enable you to demonstrate an understanding of the science of food safety, nutrition and nutritional needs in a wide range of contexts and through on-going practical sessions, to gain practical skills to produce quality food items to meet the needs of individuals.

Unit 2: Ensuring Food is Safe to Eat. This unit will enable you to develop your understanding of the science of food safety and hygiene; essential knowledge for anyone involved in food production in the home or wishing to work in the food industry. Again, practical sessions will support the gaining of theoretical knowledge and ensure learning is a tactile experience.

Unit 3: Current Issues in Food Science and Nutrition. This unit will enable you to develop the skills needed to plan, carry out and present a research project on current issues related to food science and nutrition. This could be from the perspective of a consumer, food manufacturer or caterer.

This course enables learners to study for one A Level equivalent in Health and Social Care. The course focuses on the health, social care and early year’s sector. It requires learners to look at the roles and responsibilities of different professionals across the sectors and a chance to look at current issues within society. Learners will develop an understanding of the practical, interpersonal and thinking skills required to be able to succeed in employment and higher education.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

This BTEC qualification is designed for learners who are interested in an introduction to the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information, alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in IT.


Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs including English and Maths at grade 4 or higher and a grade 5 in GCSE Computer Science or a Pass in a vocational ICT subject.


Course Content

This BTEC qualification is designed for learners who are interested in an introduction to the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information, alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in IT. Equivalent in size to one A Level. You will study four units in total.

  • Unit 1 Information Technology Systems – Students will study the role of Information Technology (IT) systems and the implications of their use in personal and professional situations. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of issues relating to the use of IT in personal and professional situations.

  • Unit 2 Cyber security and incident management - Students will study cyber security threats and vulnerabilities, the methods used to protect organisations against threats and managing security incidents.

  • Unit 3 Website Development – Students will investigate fundamental principles in website development. They will design and develop a website in response to a client brief.

  • Unit 4 Relational Database development - Students will examine relational database development principles to understand the importance of data storage and normalisation techniques and apply their skills to design and develop data storage solutions to meet a client’s requirements.

Achievement in the qualification requires a demonstration of depth of study in each unit, assured acquisition of a range of practical skills required for employment or progression to higher education, and successful development of transferable skills.

This is an exciting course which will help you to develop your practical performance skills. The level 3 subsidiary diploma for music practitioners provides a music industry qualification that will equip learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding for entry to employment in the music industry or progression to further study at a higher level. The qualifications aim to offer practical structured learning with the flexibility to specialise in different disciplines directly relevant to employment within the music industry, focusing on performance.


Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grade 4 and above including a grade 4 at English GCSE and if you have not taken GCSE Music, you will need to audition prior to being accepted onto the course as you will be required to perform regularly as part of the assessment process.


Course Content

To achieve this qualification you will complete 6 units of work, made up of 2 compulsory core units together with 4 optional units that can develop your skills and understanding of musicianship, repertoire, rehearsal, promotion, and live/recorded performance. There is no formal external examination and assessment is based on creating portfolios of evidence.

You will:

  • perform effectively on your instrument/voice;
  • rehearse and display musicianship skills;
  • initiate and develop repertoire;
  • rehearse effectively and perform music live;
  • understand contextual issues relating to music style, audience and the music industry;
  • understand relevant aspects of music technology.

The BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Music Technology enables learners to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of working in the Music Technology sector.

Course Content

This course is suitable for learners who are motivated by applied learning and learning through hands-on creative experiences related to the work of a performing musician and music technologist. This Applied General qualification is equivalent in size to 1.5 A Levels.

This qualification is delivered over 2 years covering the fundamentals in the music technology sector with optional areas of study, including remixing and working as a production team.This is a 7 unit course, with 2 externally assessed units and 5 internally assessed units. Units studied are:

Unit 5: Music Technology in Context (external)

Learners analyse the development of technology, evaluating its impact on the practice of creating and producing music

Unit 7: Music Technology Enterprise Opportunities (external)

Learners explore different types of music technology businesses and apply their knowledge, skills and understanding to enterprise opportunities

Unit 2: Studio Recording Techniques

Learners will cover the processes, equipment and practical skills required to produce multitrack recordings in a music studio environment.

Unit 3: Music and Sound for Media

Learners will explore the production of the music, sound and effects that are used for media products such as games, films and apps.

Unit 8: Creative Synthesis and Sampling

With BTEC Nationals in Sport, you have the flexibility to choose the right course to support your progression at every stage in your study programme.


Entry Requirements

5 GCSE grades at 9 to 4 including a minimum of grade 4 at GCSE PE or Merit in Sport BTEC Level 2.


Course Content

In addition to the core suite of Sport courses, you will also have the opportunity to study a qualification in Fitness Services.

This new specialist course includes a core of mandatory content plus a range of bespoke units to equip you with the skills you need in the workplace, or on specialist higher education courses.

Extended Certificate: 2 years
Units Assessed through:

  • Anatomy and Physiology written exam
  • Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and well-being controlled assessment
  • Professional Development in the Sports Industry assignment set and marked internally
  • Application of Fitness Testing OR Practical Sport Performance assignment set and marked internally

This course would complement a related GCE or other qualification to prepare for further education in other areas of sport such as related degree programmes.

The travel and tourism industry is one of the biggest and fastest growing industries in the UK. 


Entry Requirements

4 GCSE grades at 9 to 4 or equivalent including English Language


Course Content

This qualification includes three mandatory units and one additional unit covering the following content areas:

  • Travel and Tourism Industry – The travel and tourism industry in the UK is growing and is of major importance to the economy. Learners will develop the skills needed to examine, interpret and analyse a variety of statistics that measure the importance of tourism to the UK
  • Global Destinations – Learners will investigate the features and appeal of global destinations
  • Principles of Marketing in Travel and Tourism – Learners focus on how to develop a successful marketing plan for use by travel and tourism organisations to attract and engage customers
  • Events, Conferences and Exhibitions – Learners will develop knowledge and skills in resource and financial planning as they gain an insight into a wide range of events, conferences and exhibitions that are relevant to the travel and tourism industry

The course is assessed through a written exam set by Pearson (Edexcel), a written task (set by Edexcel and completed in school) and assignments (set and marked in school).

UNIFORMED PROTECTIVE SERVICES

Level 3

Duration: 2 Years

This new course is for people who are interested in learning about the uniformed protective services sector. It gives a broad basis of study, that is designed to support progression to higher education as well as employment. Throughout the course as well as knowledge of the sector you will develop vital skills for use in your future regardless of the sector you intend to go into. The course is assessed with a mixture of coursework units and examination.


Entry Requirements

4 GCSE grades at 9 to 4 or equivalent including English Language.


Course Content

The course will focus on all of the uniformed protective services and students will study the following units during the 2 years:

 

  • Unit 2 - Behaviour and Discipline in the Uniformed protective services (Externally assessed, Exam Unit) 
  • Unit 5 - Teamwork, leadership and communication in the Uniformed Public Services
  • Unit 13 - Introduction to Criminology

Plus one other from; 

  • Unit 15 - Police Powers and the Law
  • Unit 19 - Professional development in the Uniformed Protective Services
