Coursework: Crime and Punishment, 1830-1965

In this unit, you will carry out an enquiry which will address the factors influencing changing attitudes to crime and punishment and the outcomes of these changed attitudes. You will examine both the short-term significance of a factor, individual or event, as well as the factors affecting change throughout the whole period 1830-1965.

The course will begin with a short taught course, which aims to give you an overview of the theme and a context within which you will develop your coursework assignment. We will practice the development of writing focused on the concepts of assessing significance, exploring the process of change, analysis and evaluation of interpretations within the theme of the coursework programme.
