OCR National First Award in IT

Duration of Course

All students will follow a two year course. It is 100% coursework-based, starting in year 9 and finishing in year 10, with opportunities to add more options. This is designed to introduce students to the pattern of working at Key Stage 4 and to gain experience and proficiency in coursework based assessment.

  • 100% coursework portfolio
  • All units are centre-assessed and externally moderated by OCR
  • The full award and units from this qualification are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction
  • All coursework must be done in school under teacher supervision

What will I learn?

We provide thorough grounding in ICT skills, techniques and their use in real life contexts. The course is suitable for students wanting to use ICT in their future careers and is an up to date course designed to develop the skills everyone will need in work and leisure time.

Departmental expectations

We expect that all students will attend ICT lessons at least 90% of the time and make up any absences by extra work at lunch or after school. We offer support sessions most evenings for students throughout the academic year.

Career Potential

There are very few careers nowadays that do not use IT to some extent in everyday working life. Many careers need a high level of ICT skills. There are also a wide range of careers for students working in the IT industry.

Further Study

The course provides a good foundation for A Levels in ICT and Applied ICT. There are also a wide range of practical courses, NVQ, national apprenticeships and similar which the course offers good grounding for.
