BTEC Level 2 First Award in Public Services

The BTEC First Public Services qualification is designed to give you an understanding of the various career paths within the public sector. The public services sector covers a variety of areas and offers a huge choice of careers. So whether you want to be a nurse, a social worker, a teacher or someone who works in a charitable organisation, the BTEC First Public Services qualification can help you to get one step closer to achieving your goal. Your BTEC will give you an insight into the breadth of this sector, as well as sharpening your skills to prepare you for employment or further study.

From year 11 onwards, students have the opportunity to study a one year course in Public Services. On completion of this course, students will gain the equivalent of one GCSE. The course is made up of four units, three internally assessed and one externally assessed. Each unit is worth 25% of the students overall grade.

Unit 1: The Role and Work of the Public Services

This unit is externally assessed and students will be required to sit a written exam which will last for an hour. The assessment will carry 50 marks in total and will be sat in the June sometime. For this unit, students will be learn about the purpose of public services, how they are delivered, the funding and the accountability of public services.

Unit 2: Working Skills in the Public Service Sector

This unit is internally assessed and is worth 25% of the students overall grade. They will learn about the range of working skills used in the public service sector and will have the opportunity to demonstrate these skills.

Unit 3: Employment in the Public Services

Students will gain an understanding into the different employment roles and conditions of service in the public services. Students will also be given the opportunity to explore the various application and selection processes of different public services.

Unit 5: Health, Fitness and Lifestyle for the Public Services

During this unit, students will learn about the effect of basic nutrition and lifestyle factors on health and fitness. They will also explore the health and fitness requirements of different public services and finally, have the opportunity to take part in a range of public service fitness tests.

BTEC Level 3 in Public Services

BTEC Level 3 Public Services will give you an insight into the different uniformed and non-uniformed public services, from firefighters, the army and the police to mountain rescue and the coastguard, teaching and custodial care. Your qualification will help you to understand the importance of team work and effective communication within the public services as well as the entry requirements and working environment for the services you are most interested in.

Your BTEC Level 3 National Public Services is a vocational or work related qualification. This doesn’t mean that it will give you all the skills you need to do a job, but it does mean that you will have the opportunity to gain specific knowledge, understanding and skills that are relevant to your chosen subject or area of work.

From year 12 onwards, students have the opportunity of studying a Level 3 qualification in Public Services Social or Public Services Fitness. All Students will work towards completing the Certificate in their first year of study (30 credits), however, they may expand their studies and aim towards achieving a subsidiary diploma (60 credits).

Public Services Fitness Year 1:

·     Unit 1: Government, Policies and the Public Services

·     Unit 2: Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services

·     Unit 5: Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle for the Public Services.

Public Services Fitness Year 2:

·     Unit 3: Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services
