The department is currently working on putting together a residential trip for our Key stage 3 students which will link to their work in Geography as part of the Total Curriculum.
The department organise an annual international trip which takes place during the February/March half term holiday.
The trips are educational and have seen our Geography students visit Iceland in 2009, Italy in 2010 and a return to Iceland in 2011.
In Italy students experiencing a day at Mt Vesuvius, walking to the crater and explore the ruins of Pompey and Herculaneum. The students also experience the wonders of the Almafi coastline as well as enjoying a day trip to Rome. Students are based in Sorrento for the duration and get ample opportunity to explore this fantastic Italian town.
Iceland is just as, if not more exciting than the Italy trip. Students get to experience the delights of the geothermal pools – spending an afternoon in the Blue Lagoon. An afternoon is spent glacier hiking which is always a hit with the students. Other visits include trips to a variety of spectacular waterfalls, geysers and also a trip to the North Atlantic ridge, where students walk from the North American plate side across to the Eurasian plate. One night is spent away from the light pollution of Reykjavik in the hope of witnessing the awe inspiring Northern Lights. Half a day is left at the end of the trip for a walking tour of Reykjavik and an opportunity to buy souvenirs.
The destination for the 2012 Geography trip is still to be confirmed, but details will appear here shortly.
