ERS stands for Ethical and Religious Studies and as a department we offer a wide and varied range of ethical and moral topics. These engaging topics are covered alongside a wide selection of religions at key stage 3 and are taught as part of the highly innovative Total Curriculum, where students enjoy excellent facilities and the opportunity to learn ERS alongside other subjects within a thematic approach. This makes the topics very relevant to the students and to modern life and allows students to engage fully in lessons and develop their own ideas and beliefs in response to often difficult questions. This year the department also ran the first immersion day for year 7’s, where students took part in workshops and seminar groups to answer questions of a moral and theological nature. This also included activities and workshops designed and run by the students as well as outside speakers.
At Key Stage 4 the students opting for ERS GCSE will follow the Edexcel GCSE in Religious Studies. They study Religion and Life from the perspective of Christianity and Religion and Society from the perspectives of Christianity and other major world religions. Those students opting for A’ level follow the Edexcel Religious Studies course in Philosophy and Ethics.
In addition to the curriculum, the department runs regular trips and visits to supplement and enhance learning and understanding as well as for cultural experience. Over the previous few years this has included visits to Rome, Auschwitz, Prague, Verona, Venice, Krakow and London.
